Why in News?

Challenges in Quantum Computing

National Quantum Mission (NQM)

It was approved in April 2023 with a budget of ₹6,003.65 crore for the period 2023-24 to 2030-31. It aims to position India as a global hub for Quantum Technologies and strengthen Atmanirbhar Bharat in critical technologies. It focuses on Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices. It aims to develop intermediate-scale quantum computers, establish 2,000 km Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) networks, advance quantum sensors and develop indigenous quantum materials. It is implemented through four Thematic Hubs led by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Madras-C-DOT, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.

About Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is an area of computer science that uses the principles of quantum theory at the atomic and subatomic levels. It uses subatomic particles, such as electrons or photons. Classical computers, which include smartphones and laptops, encode information in binary “bits” that can either be 0s or 1s. In a quantum computer, the basic unit of memory is a quantum bit or qubit. Quantum bits, or qubits, allow the subatomic particles to exist in more than one state at the same time.
